For investigating officers
Case diary format under s.192 BNSS
Section 192 of the BNSS (s.172 of the CrPC) asks the investigating officer to write up the investigation day by day. These are the entries the section names, in a layout many States use. Your State's police rules or standing orders may prescribe a form: follow it.
01Heading
Once at the top of every entry.
- Case diary number and date
- Police station and district
- FIR number and date
- Sections of law
- Name and rank of the investigating officer
02When the information reached the officer
Date and time (s.192(1)).
03When the investigation began and closed that day
Times of beginning and closing (s.192(1)).
04Places visited
Each place, in order (s.192(1)).
05Circumstances ascertained
What the investigation found that day: the scene, seizures, arrests, documents and leads (s.192(1)).
06Statements of witnesses
The statements recorded under s.180 BNSS, inserted in the diary (s.192(2)).
07Signature
Signature, name and rank of the officer making the entry.
A criminal court may send for the diary and use it to aid the inquiry or trial, not as evidence (s.192(4)); the accused cannot call for it, except as s.192(5) allows.
