24. Where a Deputy Gaoler is appointed to a prison, he shall be competent to perform any duty required by this Act or by any rule made under section fifty-four to be performed by the Gaoler. Where there is no Deputy Gaoler, or where his services are not available by reason of sickness or other cause, the Superintendent shall, when the Gaoler is absent from the prison or temporarily incapacitated, appoint an officer of the prison to act as his substitute during such absence or incapacity, and the substitute 1870.] Prisons. 243 stitute so appointed shall have all the powers and perform all the duties of the Gaoler.
