In section 24 of the principal Act,— (i) for sub-section (1), the following sub-section shall be substituted, namely:— "(1) When any accident of the nature referred to in any of the clauses of sub-section (1) of section 23 occurs in or about a mine, the Central Government may, if it is of opinion that a formal inquiry into the causes of and circumstances attending the accident ought to be held, appoint a competent person to hold such inquiry and may also appoint one or more persons possessing legal or special knowledge to act as assessor or assessors in holding the inquiry."; (ii) in sub-section (2), the words and figures beginning with "; and every person required" and ending with "Indian Penal Code" shall be omitted.
